To access the Coors Light Zone, attendees must already have a general-admission ticket. The Coors Light Zone, is a VIP gallery perched at the 12th hole that gives attendees a fantastic view of the competitors as they play the hole. The VIP zone’s Coors Light girls keep spectators company, and a cash bar keeps spirits high. Past players have included Mike Weir and Stephen Ames, and this year’s group includes Brad Revell, two-time Ontario Junior Champion, and David Byrne, the youngest competitor on the Golf Channel’s Big Break Indian Wells, as well as a three-time Ontario Match Play Champion.
Boyd Barr sculpted the award-winning links at Smuggler’s Glen’s Golf Course by incorporating the natural surroundings of white pines, granite cliffs, and wild fescue. Bunkers lined with Hutchinson white sand and bentgrass greens create a target-style course whose natural beauty often distracts from the omnipresent challenges. Drastic elevation changes, rocky outcroppings, and fast greens can make golf balls dizzy if not putted with the proper speed and room for breaks. Watery graves await errant shots in the form of streams and ponds—the 4th, 5th, and 6th holes even incorporate the wetlands of an environmentally protected biosphere. This nature-friendly design means players often encounter hawks, foxes, and untamed golf carts grazing the land.
PGA instructors at the Smuggler’s Glen Academy can provide golfers with corrective advice to improve swing mechanics and course-management skills. Players who have triumphed over the course’s front nine can stop at the clubhouse’s BBQ Express to fuel up with a tasty snack before tackling the back nine. Those who want heartier fare can wait until they finish their round and mosey down to The Club House Grill, whose 180-degree wraparound deck overlooks the St. Lawrence River and the first tee, letting diners watch as golfers test out experimental wooden-spoon 3-woods.
