The ethereal wailing of 20 bagpipe bands resonates as the starting bell for the 30th annual North Lanark Highland Games, a celebration of ancient Scottish sport held on the banks of Ontario’s Mississippi River. Attending pipers, drummers, and dancers are not just sideline entertainment—they’re a part of the competition, squaring off against other musicians throughout the day. In line with Scottish tradition, a bevy of heavyweight athletic events revolve around tossing heavy objects, including stones, hammers, and mammoth wooden poles called cabers. Gaelic hulks will also square off in the sheaf toss, in which competitors use a pitchfork to huck a heavy burlap sack in an attempt to clear a horizontal bar. After the games have come to a close, the Celtic band Corkery Road will regale competitors and spectators alike with their traditional tunes as champions argue over who deserves to wear the golden kilt.
