2701 Saint Joseph Boulevard , Ottawa, ON K1C 1G4, +16138371668

Orléans Village’s Saint Joseph Boulevard is lined with restaurants serving a bevy of Mediterranean options, ranging from shawarma and shish kebabs to pizza and pasta. Unlike its neighbors, however, Soul Stone Restaurant specializes in Japanese, Thai, and Chinese fare. It’s not just the restaurant’s cuisine that stands out, though, but its culinary techniques. Most notably, chefs employ Canadian Soapstone, an all-natural grilling stone that allows for nonstick, high-heat searing of meat, fish, and vegetables.

Likewise, the elegant dining room features a natural-stone accent wall offset by a mural of a delicate cherry-blossom tree and exquisite touches, from decorative birch branches to paper-lantern-inspired lighting. The latter illuminates a menu of pan-Asian dishes. Read on to learn about some signature items:

Sushi: The spicy Soul Stone special roll contains soft-shell crab, cucumber, lettuce, oshinko, mayo, masago, and avocado, which is crowned with torched spicy salmon, snapper, and a cheese sauce.
Appetizer: Diners can begin with beef tataki, a starter composed of AAA-grade strip-loin steak that is aged up to 28 days before it’s lightly seared, cut into thin slices, and served with ponzu sauce.
Entree: After marinating the miso salmon in sweet saikyo miso, chefs sear the succulent fillet before setting it on a hot stone alongside asparagus, oyster mushrooms, broccoli, and other vegetables.
Dessert: Guests can conclude their meals on a sweet note with a pair of crispy banana-filled spring rolls drizzled in chocolate syrup, plus a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Drink: Drawing on Asian and Caribbean influences, the sake mojito combines the Japanese spirit with a lime liqueur, ginger ale, and fresh mint.
