Gabrielle Bégin is something of a magician. She took what used to be a fast-food chicken joint and transformed it into Gourmet Café Plus, a charming, sustainably built space that includes—wait for it—vegan and vegetarian recipes. This focus has allowed the team to pull a few tricks out of their hats with the menu, too. There’s a veggie sandwich that’s packed between two thick slices of gluten-free bread. There’s also chili and a BLT, neither of which have any meat, cheese, or regrets.

Though to be honest, the word “menu” is being used a bit loosely here. There are a few sandwiches, salads, and soups that are always available, sure, but otherwise the selection changes dramatically from week to week. That’s because Gabrielle is taking the idea of locally sourced to another level—in fact, she invites regulars to submit their favorite recipes for tasting. If the dish is good enough, it gets added to the rotation with a percentage of the profits going back to its creator.
