Loan sharks don’t have the greatest reputation. And Turcaret certainly isn’t helping their cause. Ruthless in his financial dealings, he’s greedy and deceitful—and about to meet his downfall. How? His attraction to La Baronne, a manipulative baroness who’s out for his money. The two join a cast of aristocratic swindlers and servants who aim to get ahead by employing their charms, wits, and knowledge of each other’s ATM pin numbers.

Although it waxes philosophical on greed, The Financier (Turcaret) finds plenty to laugh about. Originally written by French playwright Alain-René Lesage in 1709, and translated by Joanne Miller and Odyssey Theatre’s Artistic Director Laurie Steven, the play employs Odyssey’s signature masks along with dance and musical numbers that dazzle onlookers lounging under the stars.

Odyssey Theatre
Although those who wear masks typically do so to hide their identities, the players of Odyssey Theatre do so to transform altogether. They use disguises to play up archetypal roles, from the ruddy cheeks of a comic foil to the wide eyes of a performer who has forgotten his lines. In the summer, they don their faces under the stars in Stathcona Park, priming audiences for theatrical revelry with the open air and neighboring Rideau River.
